Wear It!

posted by Yellena in Misc., News

I’d like to invite all of you to visit my sister’s new Shop on Etsy. Daniela and I used to make clothes together growing up, and she was always just a weee bit (way) better at it. She holds a degree in art, but in recent years she has officially switched her studies from art over to fashion, and now I’m so happy to see her persuing it full-time! Her new handmade independent label, DaDa, is taking form and making waves as she sets out to, in her own words, “make clothes that could be worn in more ways than one, things you can play in and with.”

For more info about Daniela and her DaDa line, please visit her blog - wearitlikeyoumeanit.blogspot.com - or check out the latest in her Etsy Shop - wearit.etsy.com.  Go DaDa!

Birthday Bash @ Olio United - Aug. 29, 7-10pm

posted by Yellena in New Work, News

I am happy to be a part of Olio United’s 1-year anniversary celebration!

August 29th-31st Olio will be hosting it’s own 1st birthday party with style. I will be taking part in the fun by contributing three pairs of shoes, made by the wonderful TOMS and hand-painted by yours-truly. Myself and eight other artists - Amy Ruppel, Jill Bliss, Max Erdenberger, Trish Grantham, Eirk Railton, Ryan Rubnis, Katie Kulper and Aaron James - will all be designing a very limited number of original and exclusive “Aritst Series” shoes and offering them for sale at a silent auction. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to locally-based Transitions Cambodia, a not-for-profit organization that works with the survivors of sex trafficking in Cambodia.

The auction and other festivities will begin on Friday, August 29th from 7-10pm. For more details, visit OlioUnited.com, or check in on their blog. See you there!

Oliver of the Shrubs

posted by Yellena in Misc.

I don’t blog about random things too often, but I just had to share this little story:

About a week ago we started hearing little mew’s coming from under the kitchen. Obviously a kitten, most likely cute. There’s no way for a person to get under the house so we were initially concerned that it wouldn’t find a way out and we’d just have to listen to the cries get more and more faint and eventually fade. Fortunately though, it showed up a couple days later in our garden hiding inside a dense bush. It wouldn’t let us approach, but we could see its tiny little orange face through the branches. Our hearts went out, and despite potentially better judgment, we decided to give it some food. We set a little pile of catfood at the base of the bush and after quite a bit of coaxing this tiny, skinny, shivering kitten with the face of an aged stray came out and DE-VOURED it. By the following day, we could actually pick the little purr-box up. A couple days later he was looking like a healthy, happy kitten and he’d pop out of the bush for some affection every time we went outside.

The thing is, there are lots of raccoons here, and they are cute as could be but I know they would have no qualms about scarfing down this little morsel. In fact, Andrew went outside one morning just in time to see 4 young raccoons coming around the house. As soon as the kitten made a sound, two of them ran into the bush and he was sure by the sounds of growling, hissing and wailing, that he stepped out just in time to witness the last seconds of this little survivor’s life. It was pretty funny though hearing how he ran into the house looking for something to scare off the raccoons, and came out swinging a metal yardstick like a samarai and shouting at the confused creatures.

Anyway, the kitten was able to fend off the raccoons without a scratch & now he’s healthy as could be. We got him his shots and a clean bill of health, and my sis-n-law Joee (thecartbeforethehorse) found him a good home thanks to one of her big-hearted friends. We couldn’t be happier.

His name is Oliver.
